New functionalities of edge products from Softing Industrial facilitate integration into IT solutions

Haar, March 28, 2023 – The edgeConnector products and the edgeAggregator from Softing Industrial offer a range of functionalities in version 3.40 that make integration into IT solutions much easier.

The Docker-based software modules of Softing’s edgeConnector product family provide access to process data in SIMATIC S7, SINUMERIK 840D and Modbus TCP controllers. The edgeAggregator, which is also Docker-based, provides an OPC UA data integration layer in conjunction with a Docker-based IoT edge solution. This allows various OPC UA servers of the automation level to be grouped together with their associated address spaces. The aggregated data can then be made available to IT applications via a consistent OPC UA interface.

Version 3.40 of the edge products includes a number of new features that greatly facilitate integration with standard Docker IT solutions. These include:

  • Metrics support for Prometheus – enables the collection and analysis of metrics using the Prometheus query language. Metrics can be stored in applications such as Prometheus and made available for queries. There is also the possibility to send alerts based on the collected metrics.
  • Logging for container management platforms such as Kubernetes and Portainer – this streams logging information to the standard output interface of a Docker container and can be used by container management platforms such as Kubernetes or Portainer.
  • Support for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) – enabling integration with centrally hosted authentication solutions.
  • Support for the latest MQTT protocol version 5 as well as MQTT Store and Forward and MQTT Trigger Enhancement. Store and Forward guarantees protection against data loss. If the connection is interrupted, the data is temporarily stored and automatically transferred after the connection is restored. The MQTT Trigger Enhancement enables the creation of extensive and complex triggers for MQTT messages thanks to the new support of LUA scripts.

With version 3.40 of its edge products, Softing Industrial continues its commitment to improving connectivity at the interface of OT and IT and facilitating the use of standard IT management and monitoring solutions.

A collaborative approach to extend oilfield automation

A major oil field in the Middle East, already in operation for several years, has recently undergone a major expansion. Deviating from the strategies applied to existing wells, the operating company decided to enlist the help of another supplier rather than just purchasing automation components on a “one-stop-shop” basis. Key criteria for this project included the interoperability of existing systems with the new vendor’s solution, and effective remote management. The integration of Schneider Electric (SE) controllers (RTU) and Softing FF (FOUNDATION Fieldbus) gateways, a technology partner of Schneider Electric, has made it possible to obtain a secure and reliable solution.

Today, a growing number of process automation projects aim to obtain optimal solutions, even if it means using components from different suppliers. This trend is due to the reluctance of some facility operators towards one-stop solutions offered by a single supplier, which may not meet the requirements in all cases. However, if components from multiple vendors are used, facility operators must ensure that these components can be integrated and work together as part of an overall solution. A few years ago, the French automation specialist, Schneider Electric, launched a technology partnership program to enable this type of integration in an efficient way. This program, which has created an “ecosystem” of suppliers whose products complement each other perfectly, counts Softing Industrial Automation among its members. The partnership between Softing and Schneider Electric is primarily focused on data communications, with particular emphasis on fieldbuses. Together, the two companies won an important contract in the oil sector.

Expansion of the oilfield thanks to FOUNDATION Fieldbus expertise and optimized IT security

The client, being an oil well operator in the Middle East, had the objective of carrying out a major expansion of the facilities, as well as the capacity to pump the sea water used to expel the oil to the surface. The oil company’s tender required FOUNDATION Fieldbus (FF) technology to be used for this oilfield expansion project. Improving IT security was another key project specification. So far, this customer had cooperated with Yokogawa and it was planned to keep this supplier’s SCADA system.

However, to optimize the client’s cybersecurity operations, the best solutions on the market from several manufacturers had to be implemented.

Schneider controllers and Softing gateways met expectations Schneider Electric won the tender against several other automation companies. For the initial expansion phase in 2015/2016, Schneider Electric supplied 70 Foxboro SCD2200 controllers (RTUs), which had to communicate with the existing main automation system: the Yokogawa PRM. The success of this first phase was also due to the fact that Schneider called on its partner Softing to integrate its gateways into the solution. Softing has long been known for its FF solutions, with most FF field devices on the market based on, for example, Softing software stacks. While Schneider Electric’s highly reliable controllers are trusted by users, particularly in the oil industry, Softing Gateways have been key to deploying these controllers as part of this expansion project. Indeed, the Foxboro controllers offered by Schneider Electric since its acquisition of Invensys in 2014 communicate via Modbus/TCP, and do not support the FF protocol. Thanks to Softing gateways, operational equipment (OT) could be integrated via FOUNDATION Fieldbus economically and with minimal effort.

OT equipment was very easily integrated via Softing’s FG-200 gateway for a limited cost.

S5-PCLink

Step5 displays “Error 0334” when I want to establish a connection via the S5-PCLink

Please download and install the software patch s5vir122.exe from our download area.

I cannot change any settings in the S5-PCLink (e.g. IP address, name, etc….) with the S5-LanManager

Firmware version 1.03 or newer is installed in the S5-PCLink (check S5-LanManager).

Please download an update of the S5-LanManager from our web site. Replace the installed files (C:\Program Files\Softing\S5-PCLink\… ) with those from the S5LanManager_update.zip file.

Communication with the PLC is sporadically broken or cannot be established at all

On S5 PLCs of type S5U115-944 and -928B, the power sources needed by our S5-PCLink are often defective. This is indicated by a failure to connect to the PLC (green LED on S5-PCLink flashes once approx. every 4 seconds) or a broken connection at irregular intervals.

Pinging the S5-PCLink works.

Solution:
You will need a power source adapter that can be added between the PLC and the S5-PCLink, and provides the power sources.
Please contact our sales department if you need this adapter.

What is the default IP address of the S5-PCLinks (factory setting)

There is no default IP address setting. The IP address is automatically assigned by the DHCP server per default.

If there is no DHCP server available, then the module will use a random address from the IP address space 169 – … (after about 1 minute).

In case the device will not be shown in the S5-LAN-Manager then connect it directly with a crossover network cable and your PC. Please disable the Firewall. You can then configure the device in the S5-LAN-Manager. (For the operation mode this function is not necessary).

S5-PCLink is not found in the S5-LAN-Manager

Possible causes:

  • IP address / port is blocked by the firewall . Please disable the firewall and then search again in the S5-LAN-Manager. Ports see below.
  • A virus scanner could also block the communication, so please turn off the virus scanner.
  • There is a router between the PC and the module (especially NAT router), which does not forwards the search to the broadcasts.
  • If a VPN connection is used then the required ports must be free.

Ports

  • 65467 (UDP): Search S5-LAN by S5-LAN-Manager/PLCVCOM
  • 65467 (TCP): Search S5-LAN by S5-LAN-Manager/PLCVCOM
  • 10010 (TCP):  PG port ( PLCVCOM )
  • 2002  (TCP): S5 server port ( VIPA )
  • 102   (TCP): S5 server port ( RFC1006)
